Slack is a great app that can help you and your team stay in touch and share ideas and documents.
It has been around since 2014 and many companies have relied on it to streamline their communication.
My team and I use it as our main form of communication as we are spread around the world and it helps keep us all on connected.
Slack Pros
- User Interface
Adapting and getting used to the UI isn’t hard at all. Within a couple of days my team and I were able to navigate and use the app without any issues on all platforms.
It looks great too and even has messages that pop-up when your Internet is slow!
- Different Platforms
You can use Slack on Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android. This is great because whether you’re on your laptop or phone, you’ll get all of your notifications and messages.
I can see and download all the files my team shares with me. It’s how I make sure I never miss a thing.
- Integrating Apps
My team uses a lot of other apps in addition to Slack. Google Drive and Asana etc.
Being able to integrate these apps together makes my life so much easier instead of having to jump between them.
- File Sharing
As mentioned earlier, my team and I use Slack to share files frequently. It supports different formats so we don’t have to convert them before sharing.
Slack Cons
- Limitations on the Free Version
You’ll be able to use Slack for free and have access to almost all of its features. If you want, you can pay $8/month per account and get more features.
For example, customer support is better for those with paid accounts.
If you’re trying to search through old messages, your search will be limited to the last 10,000 messages on a free account.
The number of apps you can integrate will be capped if you’re using a free account.
- Audio and Video Chat
I found that Slack isn’t the best app for audio or video chats with my team. It’s just not as smooth as other apps that are dedicated to video and audio calls.
Although I must admit that this has improved over the years and the screen sharing facility really comes in handy
As far as team messaging tools, Slack takes the crown from my point of view. Slack is extremely easy to set up and even more easy to learn how to use. In addition to an extremely easy navigation and user interface, Slack has endless app integrations available to really get the most of out the platform. Pricing is more than reasonable for the plans set. File sharing is Slack's biggest downfall in my opinion, there's nothing immediately wrong with it, I just think that it could be improved and better integrated for easier collaboration.
Pros:
- Incredibly easy to set up and use
- Endless app integrations to add quite literally any functionality or feature that you're looking for
- Help bot is slightly entertaining and truly supports you to get the most out of the platform
Cons:
- Video calling isn't fantastic, video quality could use some work
- File sharing is pretty standard, but could definitely be integrated better for easier collaboration
